Safari Packing List for a Luxury Camp Stay
By Oltukai Mara Camp · 8 June 2026 · 11 min read
The definitive packing list for a luxury Maasai Mara safari: clothing colours, bush kit, camera gear, evening wear, medicines, and what to leave out of your soft duffel.
A thoughtful safari packing list makes your Maasai Mara stay smoother from the first airstrip transfer to the last sundowner. Luxury camp life is comfortable, but you still need practical clothing, sun protection, and a day pack that works on bumpy game drives.
This guide is written specifically for guests staying at Oltukai Mara Camp — intimate tents, open 4x4 drives, bush breakfasts, and elegant evenings under African skies.
Luggage rules for bush flights
Most guests reach camp by light aircraft. Soft-sided duffels are strongly preferred over hard suitcases. Keep weight within your airline’s safari luggage allowance and pack essentials in your cabin bag: medication, a change of clothes, camera batteries, and documents.
Clothing: comfort meets safari style
Choose breathable fabrics in neutral tones — khaki, olive, sand, taupe, soft brown, and muted green. These colours are practical in dust and less distracting around wildlife.
- 2–3 lightweight long-sleeve shirts
- 2–3 safari trousers or long skirts
- 1–2 short-sleeve tops for warmer afternoons at camp
- A warm fleece or insulated jacket for dawn drives
- A compact waterproof shell
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking around camp tracks
- Sandals or slip-ons for tent and lounge hours
- Socks, underwear, and a sleep layer for cooler nights
Leave neon colours and pure white outfits at home. They show dust quickly and feel out of place on safari.
Day pack essentials for every game drive
- Binoculars (8×42 or 10×42 are ideal)
- Camera body, lens, spare batteries, and memory cards
- Wide-brim hat, UV sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen
- Lip balm and hand lotion for dry air
- Insect repellent
- Reusable water bottle
- Light scarf or buff for dust and sun
- Personal medication in original packaging
Evening wear at a luxury camp
Oltukai evenings are part of the romance of safari. Pack one or two smart-casual outfits for dinner: a soft dress, linen shirt, or tailored trousers. Add a light wrap or jacket — temperatures drop after sunset even following hot days.
Health, documents, and money
Carry passport, visas or entry approvals, travel insurance details, and any required vaccination card. Speak with a travel clinic before departure about malaria precautions and recommended vaccines for Kenya.
Our stay rates are published for resident and non-resident guests. Small amounts of cash can be useful for tipping guidance shared in your confirmation documents.
What not to pack
- Heavy formalwear or high heels for bush terrain
- Excessive jewellery
- Hard-shell luggage that is awkward on light aircraft
- Strongly scented products that attract insects
- Drones (restricted in many protected areas)
Quick packing checklist before you fly
- Confirm soft duffel and weight limit
- Pack layers for cold mornings and warm middays
- Charge camera gear and power banks
- Place medication and documents in hand luggage
- Leave room for a sundowner outfit
